Man is by nature a political animal. He who is unable to live in society, or who has no need because he is sufficient for himself, must be either a beast or a god. The polis β€” the city β€” is the completion of human nature, not a compromise with it. Outside the polis, there is either savagery or divinity. Most of us are neither. Most of us require the company of others to become fully what we are.
