I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to what light I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong. I have tried to do this about slavery. I did not begin the war to end it; I ended it because the war required it, and because what I found in that necessity was something I had always believed.
