I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free. This is not mysticism. The sculptor's art is a process of subtraction β the form exists in potential in the stone; the sculptor reveals it by removing everything that is not the form. I spent three years on the David. I began by studying the block β its grain, its flaws, its existing inclinations. The figure inside was constrained by what the marble permitted. The art was to find the figure that was already there.
