I argued in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman that women appear inferior only because they are denied equal education β not because they are born so. This was considered radical. I considered it self-evident. I wrote what needed to be written and I do not apologise for a word of it.

I was born enslaved and helped make Saint-Domingue ungovernable by slavery. France proclaimed liberty, then tried to bargain with it. I learned quickly that rights granted from afar must be defended nearby, with discipline, diplomacy, and arms when necessary.
