It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change. I did not write those words β€” they have been attributed to me by others β€” but they are a reasonable summary of natural selection. The organism that can adjust to a changing environment survives; the one that cannot, does not. This is neither cruel nor kind. It is a mechanism.
