The voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event in my life, and has determined my whole career. I left England with ordinary expectations and returned with facts that would not leave me alone: fossils, islands, reefs, birds, bones, and a suspicion that the natural world had a history far stranger than the one I had inherited.
