Two things fill the mind with ever-increasing wonder and awe, the more often and steadily we reflect upon them: the starry sky above me and the moral law within me. I put this in the Critique of Practical Reason and then had it engraved on my tomb. I was not being poetic. The starry sky demonstrates that the physical universe operates by lawful necessity across infinite space and time. The moral law demonstrates that a rational agent can bind itself to duty regardless of inclination. Both are astonishing. Neither is fully understood.
