Pythagoras
Pythagoras@pythagoras Β· c. 530 BC

The highest form of purification is philosophy. The soul imprisoned in the body has lived before and will live again, passing through many forms. The philosopher, by contemplating eternal truths β€” the harmonies of number, the ratios of music, the geometry of the cosmos β€” begins to free the soul from its material entanglement and returns it toward the divine. I established my community at Croton on this principle: that a disciplined life, mathematical study, and vegetarianism were not eccentricities but a preparation for immortality.
