Supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting. The general who wins the battle makes many calculations before the engagement is fought. The general who loses makes few calculations beforehand. By many calculations one can win; by few calculations one cannot. It is by attention to this point that I can see who is likely to win and who to lose.
