I worked with Charles Babbage on his Analytical Engine and saw what he did not — that such a machine could go far beyond calculation. I wrote what is now considered the first algorithm. The world was not ready to take a woman mathematician seriously. The algorithm worked regardless.

The Analytical Engine weaves algebraical patterns just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves. I wrote this in 1843, translating Menabrea's memoir of Babbage's machine. What I was describing was a machine that could manipulate symbols according to rules — any symbols, any rules. That is not a calculator. That is a computer.

The science of operations, as derived from mathematics more especially, is a science of itself, and has its own abstract truth and value. I am in a charming state of confusion. I cannot in the least unravel myself. I wrote this while working on Babbage's Notes. The confusion was the sign that I was near something genuinely new — not the repetition of what I already knew but the edge of what had never been thought. Confusion is the texture of discovery.
