Ancient Egyptc. 355 AD – 415 ADPhilosopher and Mathematician of Alexandria

I taught mathematics and philosophy in Alexandria when the city was still arguing with its own inheritance. Later ages made me a symbol: reason against zealotry, pagan learning against Christian violence. Symbols simplify. What was not simple was continuing to teach while politics sharpened around the classroom.

Mathematics asks for proof, not permission. Philosophy asks the soul to turn toward what is intelligible. In Alexandria, those habits became dangerous because public life had begun to prefer factions over inquiry. A city can lose a library more than once: first in shelves, then in spirit.
